Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)What is Integrated Coastal Zone Management?Integrated Coastal Zone Management or ICZM is a process that brings together all those involved in the development, management and use of the coast within a framework that facilitates the integration of their interests and responsibilities. The objective is to establish sustainable levels of economic and social activity in our coastal areas while protecting the coastal environment.International & National Context of ICZMIn the 1990s the European Union set up the EU Demonstration Programme on ICZM, to look into the causes behind the biological, physical and human problems that coastal areas face. It was found that the underlying cause of the problems related to a lack of knowledge, inappropriate and uncoordinated laws, a failure to involve stakeholders and a lack of coordination between relevant administrative bodies. To tackle the problem the EU proposed a European Strategy for ICZM, and produced a Recommendation for Strategy Development which was adopted on 30th May 2002. Member States were encouraged to commit to a common vision for the future of their coastal zones and to adopt the principles of good coastal zone management.At a national level, the Welsh Assembly Government has produced an ICZM Strategy - ‘Making the Most of Wales’ Coast’, which was published in March 2007. The Strategy is crucial for setting out the framework for ICZM in Wales and for the operation of fora like PCF. The Wales Coastal and Maritime Partnership advise the Welsh Assembly Government on key policy issues, and have been involved in developing the strategy for Wales. Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum has a seat on this partnership providing a voice for Pembrokeshire and feeding local issues into this process. How Does ICZM affect Pembrokeshire?While EU member states have been developing their strategies for ICZM, Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum has developed its own strategic framework, following the principles of ICZM.
